The song is full of metaphors as well as important issues that they, themselves are trying to deal with as teenagers. I think the song portrays inner turmoil, choices and consequences in a very real way. I also like to compare it to the poem, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Both song and poem address a person who faces a difficult choice, yet later on is regretful about the path he has chosen. Leave it to an English teacher to ruin a perfectly good song! It's such a welcome change from what Metallica had done since their start in the early '80s. I love the steel guitar, and think the lyrics of the song are very moving.
