On June 3, 1997, Epic Records released the Greatest Hits of one of the most popular and influential bands of the rock era: Boston. This 16-track anthology includes not only Boston's best-known and best-loved songs, but also three brand-new Boston songs recorded and produced by group founder, guitarist and composer Tom Scholz. Boston was founded by Tom Scholz, an MIT-trained engineer and senior product designer for Polaroid whose home demo tapes led to the formation of the band and their signing to Epic Records. Released in the fall of 1976, the group's Epic debut album Boston peaked at No. 3 but remained on the Billboard Pop Albums chart for more than two and a half years. Two decades later, Boston still holds the RIAA record as the best-selling debut album of More... I Will Miss Your Inspiration. | Reviewer: Frank ------ About the song Hitch a Ride performed by Boston I saw Boston back in October of 1987. It was everything I'd hoped and more. I could not believe such a cool band, with such a generally uplifting message, with so much energy, could be so "feel-good" at the same time. Hitch A Ride is definitely, hands down, my favorite Boston song and in my Top 10 all-time favorites. With the smoking guitar solo through various movements near the end, it's also the one I most attribute to Brad Delp's passing and walking into the sunset. Think of how many songs talk about "the other side". I've thought about this often. I know Brad's end was suicide and I know too well the pain he must've felt. I guess he just didn't have it in him to keep going and that's really a shame. I think, if he'd known me, I might've given him a reason to go on. I met Brad Delp back in May of 1992 when he toured with Barry Goudreau and their spin-off band RTZ. I have a picture with Brad and Barry at the age of just 20. The one thing I remember vividly about that 10-minute encounter was how amazingly friendly and totally cool he was in person. Brad, I hope you're in a better place, pal. Your caliber of talent and simple good nature is in grave danger of total extinction in this country and so are fans like me who just appreciated you 'cause you were GOOD and not 'cause you were popular. This song will be my anthem as I leave my big-city hometown to a very small town in the mountains to get away from the insanity. The first time he sang it, I didn't know the song. But when my older brother started singing it to me, I found out that Boston sang it, so I heard the song as soon as possible, and now I love it. Even though I'm not in his class anymore, the shop teacher still sings it to me when he sees me in the hallway. So I sing Flash by Queen to him since his name is Gordon. I love this song! The references to religion are quite plentiful, and while it seems to be referring to Christianity (there's even a Catholic prayer in it,) it's vague enough that it could be relevant to any religion. Furthermore, it could also be construed as a love song, a formula which is a bit tired for certain, but is still viable as long as it avoids being mushy (a feat which this song certainly achieves, albeit not to quite the same level as, say, "Hey There Delilah".) This song is also a bit of a moral sermon, so I figure that it would probably be a good fit for the Elite Beat Agents... Every time he would play that I loved it. God I miss that band. I miss Brad Delp he was an awsome singer and guitarist. If you did not know the guitar he used he made himself from scratch.
