Of Wolf And Man Lyrics
Artist(Band):Metallica
Review The Song (38)Print the Lyrics
Off through the new day's mist I run
Out from the new day's mist I have come
I hunt
Therefore I am
Harvest the land
Taking of the fallen lamb

Off through the new day's mist I run
Out from the new day's mist I have come
We shift
Pulsing with the earth
Company we keep
Roaming the land while you sleep

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeling I've been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, Back to the meaning of... Life

Bright is the moon high in starlight
Chill in the air cold as steel tonight
We shift
Call of the wild
Fear in your eyes
It's later than you realized

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeling I've been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, Back to the meaning of...Life
(guitar solo)
I feel a change
Back to a better day
(shape shift)
Hair stands on the back of my neck
(shape shift)
In wildness is the preservation of the world

So seek the wolf in thyself

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeling I have been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, back to the meaning of wolf and man

Badass! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/18/09

Badass song! Metallica beats everyone when it comes to music in general. Country sucks, hip hop is gay, and I can't understand what dumbass rap people are saying(WTF you suck). Well back to the main point. This song is just another example of Metallica being the badasses they are.

to be perfectly honest i don't think Mr Hetfield would have put much thought into the lyrics, just enough to make it rhyme and make it about werewolves. why is everyone so pissy over the subjest of it's "hidden meaning" do you think shakespeare thought about the endless amount of hidden meanings in "romeo and juliet" no i don't. its a good song, just enjoy it

idiots! | Reviewer: jecqua aich | 9/20/09

after reading some of these reviews, it surprises me how stupid people ACTUALLY really and truly are.

Yes, the song is about werewolves- hence the title, hence the constant reference to shapeshifting and wolves and natural instinct.

but if you listened to your english teacher and had half a brain you would know that the song is so perfectly crafted (as most songs are by Metallica) that the reference to werewolves is a METAPHOR.

yes, Hett howls in the live performances of this. and i mean, so what? he laughs menacingly in a lot of others so does that mean the songs are literally a joke to him or what?

gawsh some people are thick

in all, its another great song by the boys. Brilliantly crafted and played with its chugging guitar lines and running snare. it reminds me a bit of enter sandman with the four horsemen.

perfect. yet again.

Nothing have a single meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/09

Why is everyone here concentrating on having one meaning for the song or the other, I believe that many things in life have multiple meanings, and literature can capture this with more ease.
The song here has BOTH meanings at the same time, it tells about were wolves for sure (it says shape-shift!), but if you study something about mythology you will understand that the legend of werewolves was actually a representation of man's status, his yearning to get back to nature, the dormant animalistic nature within him... so actually when metallica speaks about this legend they have that hidden meaning along with it. It's natural, everything in life has multiple meanings.

this song sucks! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/22/09

James has lost his damn mind.
back to the meaning of life?
shape shift, earths gift?
what is this crap?
i think they need to stop trying so hard, because they suck now. please someone, tell metallica to stop sucking so hard. i miss them so much.
james wake the hell up!
get your head out of your ass man!

I can't believe this song wasn't a single off of the black album. Everything in this song is just raw power. Hetfields vocals are wiithout a doubt the greatest in this song. Combined with Lars's machine gun drums and Newsteads powerhouse base and that guitar scream solo by Hammett. This song is just so badass and yet not very popular. People need to hear this shit!

Alpha's Two Cents... | Reviewer: Alpha Wolfie | 6/2/09

1.) This song is a fantastic song, regardless of how you take it. I've never been the biggest fan of Metallica, and yet I still find myself very much drawn to this song. It's musical styling and great sense of power within the song mixed with well thought-out lyrics makes for a great listen.

2.) I can see the points people have made regarding this song being about the White-Wolf game "Werewolf: The Apocalypse" though I would be hesitant to actually state this is what the song was in reference to. I would agree that while the song could easily be taken in its literal sense (the idea of shapeshifting, heightened senses, basically becoming a lupine/werewolf creature) it can also be taken to be a reference to man's inner nature. We all inherently have a connection to the nature from whence we have come. While we shroud ourselves in creature comforts to help us forget this fact, it still stands as a fact none-the-less. We are all born without clothes, and without being taught the laws we now abide (most of us, anyway,) we would still be very much wild.

3.) Likening man to wolf is not entirely that far-fetched. While we may not be physiologically the same, there are many values which man holds to which are espoused in the being of Canis Lupis. Loyalty, family-minded, subtlety of dominance and submission, intelligence, perseverance, warrior spirit, sense of property, and a general wish to not be alone in the world... (not always the case with either, but by majority...)

4.) The best way to deal with things like this is simply to sit back, listen to the song, and enjoy it. Whether you're a werewolf fan, or a psychology fan, or even a mixture of the two... just enjoy a fantastic song.

RE: RE: The meaning | Reviewer: G-no | 4/14/09

well, I think this guy's right
sure, the listener can always interpret a song the way he wants it, but the REAL meaning behind a song will always be found at its origins, the writers.
which is in this case metallica (james hetfield to be precise xD:P)
so even if someone else finds that it ''suits'' werewolfs better, TECHNICALLY he would be wrong, because the writers intention was to refer to man's own primal instincts.

re: The Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/29/09

i think that the person who posted before me was correct in saying that the song is a metaphor, but it also has a literal interpretation, he says that who ever thinks that the song is about werewolves is listening to the song wrong. well that's where he is wrong because music is for the listener to interpret it how he wants to and if someone wants to think its about werewolves it is and if someone else thinks its about turning back to your instincts than it is. IF anyone's ever read the novella "The Turn of the Screw" then they would understand that any song or book can be interpreted many different ways, and as long as you can back those up with support than your just as right about something than someone else who has a different opinion than you. So i thank we all can thank the person who posed before me for being ignorant

The Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/3/09

As with all metallica songs it is a metaphor, its about getting back to your instincts and living life with nature as said in the bit "back to the meaning of life" its not about turning into a werewolf, your not listening to the song right if you think that your taking it to literal and not thinking very deeply about it
