One Great City Lyrics

Review The Song (7)Print the Lyrics
Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store, the clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say

I hate Winnipeg

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway
The same route everyday
And in the turning lane
Someone’s stalled again
He’s talking to himself
And hears the price of gas repeat his phrase

I hate Winnipeg

And up above us all
Leaning into sky
Our golden business boy
Will watch the North End die
And sing, “I love this town”
Then let his arcing wrecking ball proclaim

I
Hate
Winnipeg

Review about One Great City

I live in winnipeg and... in the middle of winter everyone relates with this song. quite frankly, 3 days ago people were ACTUALLY were skating on the roads and highways we drive on... For half of winter we live ironically in a sunny blistering cold enviroment. For the other half, its grey... grey and ugly. I believe most people whom claim "they hate winnipeg", are really just fed up with what we go through and wonder why we live here while the west coast holds warmer weather even.... Summer time in winnipeg although is amazing. If they were to right a song about winnipeg in summer it would be a whole different story

i saw this song performed live in winnipeg yesterday at none other than the burton cummings theatre. he played it solo encore style and you could really feel a melancholy in the song, and from all the people relating to it. it feels like his complaint is born of this city not living up to his love for it. afterall, why lament on something that's not dear to you?

I don't think he actually hates Winnipeg. If all those people hate it, why are they still there? He hates it like I hate my hometown, only to complain, but really he likes it. The last verse is the about the only who really hates Winnipeg, the business man killing the North End and what it has to offer to bring "new better things." He is the only one who says he loves it, because he's turning a profit, but like the song says, his actions show how he really feels about the city. If he loved it he wouldn't be doing what he does, which is why I think the last "I hate Winnipeg" is so drawn out.

Lovely and funny | Reviewer: Chris | 11/12/07

I don't live in Winnipeg, never even been there, but I can still imagine very well the picture he's painting.
Very nice and clever song, smart lyrics and I nearly sprayed my monitor with my drink when I heard the 'I...hate...Winnipeg'-bit for the first time.
If he hates Winnipeg so much, he should come to Montréal! :)

I live in winnipeg.. and i living in winnipeg feels like a constant carride where you sit in the backseat staring out at the dead trees and snow, and cry because even in a city so dead, theres someone alive enough to break my heart

haha this song is actually so true. I live in winnipeg, and there's always someone stalled in a turning lane, the people in the dollarstore always get so fed up when you pay for 10$ worth of stuff in loonies, and the jets actually did suck, but they were still awesome.

Great Song | Reviewer: Caren | 7/27/06

I don't live in Winnipeg, I live in Minneapolis, but have family there and have been going to Winnipeg every year since I was born. My son and I were driving from my Grandmother's to my cousins (where we were staying) and heard this song, now we keep singing it to each other. I actually love Winnipeg because it represents so many happy time for me. This song is very funny and was quite unexpected when it got to the chorus "I Hate Winnipeg".
